HIV associated neurodegeneration requires p53 in neurons and microglia.

HIV infection of the central nervous system leads to HIV-associated dementia (HAD) in a substantial subset of infected individuals. The pathogenesis of neuronal dysfunction in HAD is not well understood, but previous studies have demonstrated evidence for activation of apoptotic pathways. The tumor suppressor transcription factor p53 is an apical mediator of neuronal apoptosis following a varie...

Auto-Immune Addison\'s Disease Associated with Hyperprolactinemia

SUMMARY Three cases ofauto-immune addison's disease are reported in association with hyperprolactilinemia. All of them had galactorrhea. In three cases complete resolution of hyperprolactitinemia occurred with corticosteroid replacement. We suggest that hyperprolactinemia was due to cortisol deficiency operating directly or indirectly at the level of the pituitary.

Microglia regulate hippocampal neurogenesis during chronic neurodegeneration

Neurogenesis is altered in neurodegenerative disorders, partly regulated by inflammatory factors. We have investigated whether microglia, the innate immune brain cells, regulate hippocampal neurogenesis in neurodegeneration. Using the ME7 model of prion disease we applied gain- or loss-of CSF1R function, as means to stimulate or inhibit microglial proliferation, respectively, to dissect the con...

The Role of Microglia in Retinal Neurodegeneration: Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson, and Glaucoma

Microglia, the immunocompetent cells of the central nervous system (CNS), act as neuropathology sensors and are neuroprotective under physiological conditions. Microglia react to injury and degeneration with immune-phenotypic and morphological changes, proliferation, migration, and inflammatory cytokine production. An uncontrolled microglial response secondary to sustained CNS damage can put ne...

Disruption of Neuronal Autophagy by Infected Microglia Results in Neurodegeneration

There is compelling evidence to support the idea that autophagy has a protective function in neurons and its disruption results in neurodegenerative disorders. Neuronal damage is well-documented in the brains of HIV-infected individuals, and evidence of inflammation, oxidative stress, damage to synaptic and dendritic structures, and neuronal loss are present in the brains of those with HIV-asso...
